7 Elements of an Effective Check-In Meeting

A Check-in Meeting is a short, recurring conversation between a manager and an employee or among team members that helps share progress, address challenges, and stay aligned on goals. Unlike formal performance reviews, check-ins focus on day-to-day priorities, real-time feedback, current challenges, and the support team members need to succeed.

Check-in meetings are typically held weekly or bi-weekly and last around 15–30 minutes. They provide an opportunity for an open, two-way conversation where both managers and employees can discuss what is working well, what needs attention, and where additional support may be needed.

A well-structured check-in usually covers several key areas, including recent achievements, progress on ongoing work, current priorities, potential roadblocks, and the next steps. Starting with a quick mood or energy check can also help create an open and supportive atmosphere. Ending the conversation with clear action items and follow-ups ensures that discussions lead to meaningful progress rather than becoming another routine status meeting.
